It’s so easy to fall into habits and routines that simply don’t work — and it can feel even harder to break the cycle.
I know those stressful mornings all too well. Waking up late. Children wanting to watch TV before they’ve even eaten breakfast. Tantrums about brushing teeth. Searching for shoes that were “definitely right there yesterday.” And all of this after a night of broken sleep (what even is restful sleep anymore?!).
Mornings can easily become the most stressful part of the day. But I’ve learned that even small changes to your routine can completely shift the tone for the hours ahead.
And honestly? Sometimes it starts with managing to drink a cup of tea while it’s still warm before the chaos truly begins.
Packed Lunches First, Stress Less
One of the first things I like to get sorted is packed lunches. Once that’s done, I feel calmer already.
We try to mix things up during the week while keeping everything practical and quick. I invested in a Ninja Airfryer last year and I genuinely wouldn’t look back. It makes cooking chicken pieces for wraps, sausage rolls or egg muffins so much quicker — especially on busy mornings or when prepping ahead.
Other days we rotate simple options like sandwiches, crackers or pasta. The key for me is quick, easy and something I know they’ll actually eat. Less waste and full tummies always feels like a win.
I also use bento-style lunch boxes from Sistema. They’ve been such a simple but helpful change. The compartments remind me to include all the little extras — fruit, yoghurt, snacks — and everything fits neatly into their lunch bags without that last-minute panic of “Have I forgotten something?”
A Visual Plan = Fewer Arguments
I keep a magnetic whiteboard on the fridge with meal ideas for the week and reminders for the older two about what needs doing before any screen time after school.
It saves so many repeated conversations.
The children can see it clearly, and expectations are set without me constantly feeling like I’m nagging. It brings structure without feeling rigid.
The Porch That Changed My Sanity
I recently bought a coat stand with a shoe rack and bench for the porch.
I didn’t realise how much joy it would bring me not having coats, bags and shoes dumped everywhere downstairs. It’s a smaller one that fits perfectly in the space, and while it still requires the occasional reminder, it has stopped our hallway becoming an obstacle course.
Sometimes it’s the simplest home tweaks that make the biggest difference.
Creating Calm Before Bed
Evenings can bring a sudden burst of energy (surely it’s not just mine?!).
We’ve always promoted reading before bed — it’s part of school homework too — but I found that creating a cosy corner made it even more effective.
Soft blankets. Dim lighting. A calm atmosphere.
We use LED light strips with a remote so we can adjust the brightness or soften the colour. It instantly changes the mood and helps them settle. I also learned the hard way that everyone needs their own blanket to avoid unnecessary arguments — small lesson, big impact!
Small Changes, Big Difference
Breaking a stressful routine doesn’t mean overhauling your entire life overnight. Sometimes it’s just one practical swap, one visual reminder, or one calmer space that shifts everything slightly.
Family life is busy. It’s noisy. It’s unpredictable. But small, intentional changes can make the chaos feel more manageable.
I hope some of these ideas help you find a little more ease in your mornings and a little more calm in your evenings.
Because sometimes, that’s more than enough.
